Regarding An Inspector Calls

What would be the most beneficial quotes for me to learn when for exams, like the top 5/10?

Hey, love this question.

Yes, learn quotes. Your school is absolutely right to get you doing that.

But the reason you’re learning them isn’t just to repeat them.

It’s because of how the marks work.

In the May 2024 Edexcel paper, for example, they literally gave students this quote in the question:

Inspector: … she’d used more than one name. But her original name – her real name – was Eva Smith.
Explore how Eva Smith/Daisy Renton is significant in An Inspector Calls. You must refer to the context of the play in your answer.

So they already have something to analyse.

The examiner report makes it clear that strong answers don’t just drop quotes, they interpret them and zoom in on words.

For example:

Why “real name”? (To identify the person the Birlings destroyed) Why the surname “Smith” ( a common name used by many)? etc

That’s where the marks are built.

It’s not about memorising 10 random lines.

It’s about knowing themes (social responsibility, class, power, gender) and having flexible quotes you can use to explore those ideas.

I’m really sorry we don’t have full English Literature content on Exams Made Easy yet it’s still brand new and we are focusing on English Language and Maths G.C.S.E's first, as they’re compulsory for everyone.

In the meantime, I’ve created the attached guide so you’ve got something clear and practical to work from. It is longer than we will have on the individual sections of the website, but is broken down into sections for ease.

If you let me know:

• Which exam board you’re using

• The quotes your teacher has given you to revise

We’ll show you exactly how to use them in the exam, no matter what the question ends up being, and help you narrow them down so you’re not revising blindly.

Remember you’ve absolutely got this 💛

This is a safe and welcoming space for students to support each other with their GCSE's and ask a teacher for help

Think of this as your "I just don't get it" zone!

You know how everyone keeps saying G.C.S.E's are important, it is essential you get 4's or above in every subject... But hardly anyone actually explains how to actually do that?

It's almost like they expect you to know how to:

  • Revise for your G.C.S.E's properly

  • Remember everything your teacher has ever taught you

  • Know how to answer every question the way the examiner wants you to
